The One That Got Away
The One That Got Away

acrylic on panel, 18" x 13"

created aboard the R/V Falkor in the Pacific Ocean

SOLD

This painting was created from the Schmidt Ocean Institute's ROV live camera feed. I was lucky to be watching the monitors when this sea star, living near a methane seep in the deep ocean, was captured. The sea star quickly escaped, leaving behind one of its legs, which will likely grow back. This leg will provide data on how life supports itself around this methane rich environment.

acrylic on panel, 24" x 24"

created aboard the R/V Falkor in the Pacific Ocean

SOLD

Titled after my favorite quote by the luck dragon Falkor from The Never Ending Story. This painting is a portrait of the ROV SuBastian getting a newly invented "bubble wand" installed by an engineer on deck before plunging 2500 feet into the ocean.

The wet lab aboard the R/V Falkor is where I carved out a small studio space. The wet lab is an active place and I was grateful to be constantly surrounded by inspiring people, ocean sediment, and a wide array of scientific instruments. In this painting, scientists Veronique Oldham and Jen Karolewski filter, study and collect sediment from around deep ocean methane seeps at all hours of the day.

Researchers can use the voices of artists to express their ideas and findings in diverse ways. Scientists spend lives learning to collect and process data. Creating artwork exploring these processes is one way to draw outsiders into complex theories built upon years of research and data collection. This painting, created in the wet lab aboard the R/V Falkor features scientists Abigail Keller and Izzy Baker, hard at work processing samples late into the night.

I am amazed at how much innovation happens aboard the R/V Falkor. Beckett Colson designed and built this instrument to measure gasses in the ocean. It's a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment being tested in the field for its first time. Not without hurdles, but with great success.

This is my final painting aboard the Falkor during a three week residency. I created this using a drone photo captured by photographer/videographer Kevin McHugh during this cruise. Fusing my experiences with the ROV SuBastian and images from the ROV live camera I created this painting of science in action.

The crew of the R/V Falkor works with amazing efficiency deploying the crown jewel of this cruise, the ROV SuBastian. SuBastian will be diving to a depth of 2,600ft today, in order to collect bubbles of methane, ocean sediment, and creatures living nearby.
